Born in Egypt to noble parents, Gabre Menfes Qidus spent years performing miracles in the desert, displaying wisdom and extraordinary abilities from a young age. His legendary journeys to the Holy Land, where he visited Bethlehem, Jerusalem, and Nazareth, culminated in the founding of the monastery of Zuqualla in Ethiopia, where he preached and performed miracles.
 
In Ethiopian iconography, Gabre Menfes Qidus is depicted with thick white hair covering his body, standing among lions and leopards.
