He established the monastery of Debre Damo in Tigray, at the behest of Emperor Gebre Mesqel of Axum. According to tradition, Abune Aregawi was a disciple of the renowned Coptic monk Pachomius the Great, who was a pioneer of Cenobitic Monasticism.
 
Legend has it that God sent a large snake to assist Aregawi in climbing the steep-sided mountain to construct Debre Damo in Tigray.
